. . .sometimes as i hear the seemingly endless tide of automatic pop, junk music and disposable pap, I feel we have lost something. To balance that view perhaps we can also consider that there was also a lot of bad music made back then and we now have the luxury of selective listening. Nevertheless . . .it’s undoubtedly true that they’re not making music like they used to. There are certain complexities here that demand a deeper analysis. A laundry list of considerations follows 1) A lot of the great music that we love from that time (the 60s?) was the result of a hard-core commercial music industry. There is a relentless middle-of-the road factor playing out there. 2) The distribution channels for this music were, by today’s standards, limited and tightly controlled so what we are seeing is a very thin slice of possibility 3) Today’s commercial-industrial music is often pretty dire. House music and variants have spread virally into contemporary music so it’s hard to find pop music that hasn’t been robotized 4) There is good and even great music being made today. The advent of the internet and digital recording have brought musical production and global distribution into the reach of every-person. The results are far less tightly controlled than the music industry of the past 5) The profusion of both professional and semi-professional music available on global distribution platforms like Youtube, iTunes, Grooveshark et al means that a lot of music that was not released commercially previously and therefore carrying limited incentive for musicians to produce . . .is now available 6) New classical forms have emerged from contemporary musical culture. Classical meaning simply “excellent” music. Take for example Jazz. There is a lot of truly excellent jazz music being performed in little (and sometimes in BIG) places round the world. Add to this the influences of “world music”. 7) The bigger picture reveals a world in which consumers need to be more conscious, discriminating and aware of who they are being in relation to musical taste and consumption, and where and how they find, discover, share and celebrate and listen. A great example is the busker or market performer. Just because they are close enough to reach out and touch or to say hello to, doesn’t mean they are not as fabulous as the famous and unreachable. This requires of us that we participate in the adventure of our own lives. If you want to break free of the restrictions the system develop some discrimination and discover what is quite likely in your own backyard. The music game has well and truly changed with more power in the hands of artists and audiences. This seems to be a journey in which we are all being given expanded opportunities and new cultural and personal responsibilities.
Rather than just talk about this as an abstract concept let’s provide an example of what is being said above. There is an excellent musician who goes by the name of Soulman O’Gaia. Soul along with his beautiful muse and wife Kiora, does the troubadour rounds in Northern NSW and South East Queensland of Australia – out of a well traveled van. You wouldn’t hear him on commercial radio – he doesn’t have a commercial recording contract. Dr Quantum has enjoyed listening to Soul at various markets from Byron Bay to Eumundi. He has also appeared at Woodford and a variety of concerts in this area. Here is a musical treasure. I have heard Soul performing in a little open tent with ten or twelve other gobsmacked punters who were happening by. Why am I sooo old skool? I wanted to send emails to some people i met at a festival recently and many protested that they only use Facebook now. I don’t check my emails was the often repeated mantra. OK . . . Apparently email is just so passe. So I thought I would ask the guy at the Next Byte Apple shop in Brisbane if I am off the pace with the Facebook thing. His response? Facebook is Old School . . .email is the go again. OK . . .so in other words email is not old fashioned. Well . . .HONESTLY! how could it be? It was only invented yesterday and become within the first ten years of its ubiquity – say from 1995 to 2005 – THE indispensable communications technology of the digital age. It’s right up there with mobile computing. Huh! So where the F&%k are we NOW then? The fact is that no one really knows. But here’s what’s going on according to Dr Quantum.
The rate of change is now so rapid that the state of technology is actually in a state of fluidic flux. Technologists have itchy fingers on hair triggers. This is a breeding ground for the emergence of things that will amaze YOU. The Facebook frenzy of furious friending may well be the online experience du jour for some people. While for others it may be the deeper and more detailed content that email allows. The fact is that the gene codes for its environment. In other words if you meet folks who are into Facebook, then getting into Facebook with them may be a great thing to do. On the other hand if you’re hanging out with a group of History Professors, they may prefer email, or even letters written on parchment in copperplate with a Gooses quill, while a group of truck drivers prefer the CB radio. Context then is everything and flexibility is key.
If you’re like me and remember being sent home from school to watch the Moon landing on black and white TV, (Neil Armstrong RIP) then you may find all the communications technology just a tad overwhelming. Ganglions are twitching so rapidly that many have turned to valium or even in desperation to meditation. Shock horror gasp. There is a storm of static raging in the ethers and the blasts of noise in the multiple media rooms that are people’s lounge rooms, bedrooms, cars, bars and handbags . . . and soon no doubt in the brain implants of what? . . .12 year olds - ARE DEAFENING. Something’s going on here that is wildly unpredictable. The upside will be truly amazing. I am holding for that upside. There are already enough negatives floating around that speculating on the dystopia is wholly meaningless at this point. The future is having a party and we’re all invited. Don’t forget to R.S.V.P. it will be a surprise. Promise.
Earthship Tire Wall Withstands Chilean Earthquake 6/7 on Richter

The Australian Egg Corporation has just announced that they will support the mass torture of Chickens with the intention of hoodwinking the Australian public. Funnily enough they represent the interests of the big egg producers. James Kellaway the Corporation’s Managing Director is determined to sign off on the new standard which will enable the intense factory farming of 20,000 birds per hectare to be called “free range” – SMH April 15th Farmers Crack The Free Range Code. In fact Mr Kellawy admits that one in three eggs labeled Free Range currently come from chooks farmed in greater numbers that 20,000 per hectare.
We can only imagine that Mr Kellaway is a suit wearing man because if you’re going to administer and justify the mass torture of animals and then attempt to defraud the Australian public in the process you probably need to be wearing a suit to get away with it. This is a fine example of corporate Fascism. Governance should be for the protection of humane and ethical standards, not to enable the maximisation of profits at the expense of the fair treatment of animals. When the interests of Government and Big Business merge. That’s called Fascism. This is the worst of Corporatism. It’s factory farming Nazism with the Chooks as victims. Bottom line: You can absolutely not trust the label Free Range anymore, you will have to look for the stamp of the Free Range Farmers Association or the Free range Egg and Poultry Association of Australia or when you are purchasing from a growers or farmers market be sure that the person selling the eggs can describe the conditions that the chooks live in. That would be one small step for a man one giant leap for the chooks.
You see there is a problem for the big egg producers. Australian consumers have been increasingly deciding that they would prefer eating ethical eggs, that is eggs that come from Free Range chooks. What Free Range was always supposed to mean is that that the chooks get to Range or Roam Freely on pastures thus enjoying a relatively happy existence. But you see the Egg Corporation supports the profits of big egg producing interests who don’t mind consigning an animal to a lifetime of torture as long as they can make a buck out of it. It costs more to produce eggs if you’re going to give the birds room to roam. Ergo it costs less if you can squeeze them in tight. Solution? Just redefine what is a Free Range chook. A very corporate solution to problem solving. Just call the problem something else. It’s not intense factory farming which is a form of animal torture. Hey presto! It’s Free Range.
Enter the ethically minded and caring small farmer types and the Free Range Farming Association. They long ago lobbied and won the right to call their more ethically produced eggs Free Range. But this started encroaching on the profits of the big producers whose sole aim is to maximise profits. So they moved the goal posts to enable the big producers to call a chook that’s stuffed into a fairly tiny space a Free Range chook. This deception has been going on for a while now. And since the big producers have managed to get away with it for so long they have decided to go the last mile and just claim the Free Range title – for marketing purposes you must understand – and apply it to the appaling condition of 20,000 chooks per hectare. The Zeitgeist is rEevolution > It’s really happening, and it’s happening NOW. This is such a massive . . .such a seismic shift as the cliche would have it, that sometimes it’s difficult to actually see it. The changes are indeed so deep, so tectonic that it may be you do not realize the seemingly stable structure you are on is moving rapidly till it bumps into another structure that exists on the same scale. That’s a BIG bump. Or maybe you do realize – It is stimulating, disturbing. The darE! often brings what the pundits are now calling Dis-continuous change. In other words it may be a kind of change that is unpredictable from the observable sequence of cause and effect in the immediate environment. This is the nature of the Disturbing Age of rEvolution – of darE!
We don’t have a Karl Marx behind this revolution. We have thousands of them. There is no Vladimir Leninor Mao Tse Tung. That is so last century. Every gamer twitching on a playstation and forking instant noodles into themselves is a revolutionary.

The most beautiful moleculeis said to be carbon C60 and variants, known collectively as Fullerenes. The C60 story is both a wonderful treasure trove of delights and by turns unspectacular fizzers. It is all part of our current mysterious and marvelous history. In 1996, for the discovery of the structure of C60 (see picture above) the Royal Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Kurl, Kroto and Smalley. Fact: In the 1990s there were more chemistry papers written about Carbon C60 than any other Chemistry subject by a factor of approximately 9 to 1. The extraordinary discovery of C60 (Bucky Balls & Fullerenes) heralded the warm glow of great hope . . . in many hearts, for scientific breakthroughs rarely see such wonder. Up until now it seems that the most significant outcome from C60 is Carbon nanotubes . . .all very well but it’s not exactly what was initially euphorically envisioned. A whole new industry will one day flourish based on the unlocked secrets of C60 for the production of super strength light-weight materials and the pricincipal raw material will be, without a doubt . . . COAL! And so today C60 is still virtually sitting on the shelf. It is a veritable sword in the stone. Perhaps we need a Lady of The Lake for Modern times and Fullerenes. Who can unlock this great secret? Well . . .if miracles take a little longer that we might at first imagine the wisdom says be realistic and demand the impossible.Go Con-Figure
On the flip side of the C60 story is, entirely appropriately, one of history’s most fascinating counter-points. Namely that the people of the world are now threatened with multiple calamities due to the burning of fossil fuels. If you can follow the story here . . .one of the principal forms of fossil fuels that we burn is coal – a product made up mainly of carbon.Yes . . .yes. . . yes. It’s a case of – you can laugh or you can cry.Go Con-Figure
Now it just so happens that Australia is the world’s leading producer of coal. And in pursuit of this black treasure, assorted billionaires and various governments are happy to oversee the mining of coal, with courts, guns and prisons at the ready should should any be foolish enough to try to stop them. Never mind the destruction to the environment, sensitive eco-systems, endangered species, trampling on the rights of farmers, tourism, Aboriginal sacred sights and God knows what. If you happen to be in the way of the black coal juggernaut then look out. In Australia we are taking out of the ground around 500Million Tonnes of coal annually (we couldn’t verify the exact figure because the Australian Coal Association do not appear to publish this most basic fact on their PR heavy web site). More than half of which is exported to China, Japan, India and numerous other countries. One way or another it gets burned resulting in huge quantities of Carbon Dioxide being expelled into the atmosphere. According to a recent calculation if we made a column of coal 1 metre by 10 metres out of the coal we dig up every year in Australia . . .it would reach to the moon. Freaky stuff.And people wonder how our burning of fossil fuels could influence climate. Unbelievable. Let’s do our best to wake those people up. It must now be understood that any who organize against the simple fact that burning fossil fuels is causing climate change are in truth now guilty of crimes against humanity. One day they may be so charged. We can only imagine that history will judge these pilferers of the common good and security not at all well. We must wish such deformed wrongdoers and all who conspire with them the very best of luck, because it is highly likely that they will need it. Go Con-Figure

Truly Extraordinary Fact No’1: Clean and safe clean energy technologies called Zero-Point energy devices (among other things) have been routinely shut down and hidden from the public for the past 100 or so years. This started with Tesla and continues to the present day.
Truly Extraordinary Fact No’2: The carbon contained in the coal we are burning – principally to fire coal power plants – could be used in materials using compositions based on Fullerenes to make super strength light-weight products for all kinds of structural, engineering and building materials.
